Last week a debate was held in the House of Commons on state pension age (SPA) rises, in which the government was accused of unfairly causing hardship to thousands of older women whose retirement age has increased by several years.
Scottish National Party MP Mhairi Black, who secured the debate, said women who had already suffered from inequality were now facing hardship in the name of equal SPA with men. Black put forward a motion calling on the government to implement transitional provisions immediately for woman hit hardest by SPA increases. The motion was passed by 158 votes to zero.
Ross Altman the Pensions Minister has been under pressure from campaigners to reverse state pension age rises legislated for by the previous government since day one of her job but has so far dismissed them, saying the issue had already been settled in parliament.
