Research from Aegon shows that some 92 per cent of the population in the UK are falling behind where their retirement targets are concerned, with 59 per cent of people unaware of the benefits of consolidating their pension.
Aegon UK Direct’s managing director Mark Till explained that consolidating multiple pension pots can see retirement funds depleted because people will end up having to pay several management fees from different providers.
“Consolidation also makes engagement more efficient. It is nonsensical for people to have consumer packages such as broadband, or utility packages in their daily lives, but not want the same for their pension. When pots are spread widely it can stifle engagement and lose you money you didn’t know you had, so in a sense, more pension consolidation in the country can help drive up engagement and awareness with pension provisions,” he added.
It can be hard to keep track of how your numerous workplace pensions are performing if you’ve worked with a number of different employers. Transferring everything into one pension can make it a lot easier to manage and opting for something like a self-invested personal pension can mean you can take advantage of a wide variety of different investment options at a relatively low cost.
