Former pensions minister and Liberal Democrat MP Steve Webb has been handed a knighthood for political and public service in this year’s New Year’s honours list.

Now director of policy at Royal London, Webb  was a member of parliament for almost two decades.

While minister of state for pensions during the coalition government, Webb introduced the “triple-lock” pension guarantee and implemented auto-enrolment into workplace pensions, which has resulted in seven million people newly saving for retirement.

Webb was previously professor of social policy at Bath University specialising in poverty, taxes and benefits.

He said: “It is humbling and unexpected to receive an honour of this sort. Without the partnership of the many people I have worked with over the years on a range of pensions issues and campaigns it would not have been possible to deliver the reforms that I have been involved with. Each one of them deserves to share in this honour”.

Other financial services figures honoured:

Various other individuals working in financial services were also awarded for their services to the industry, including Ernst and Young global head of FinTech Imran Gulamhuseinwala, who got an OBE.

Schroders head of public policy Sheila Anne Nicoll was also awarded an OBE. Nicoll worked at the Financial Services Authority between 2007 and 2013, then moved to Ernst and Young as a senior adviser before being hired by Schroders.
